"I use Matrikon's OPC Server for Modbus as a communications interface between the Koyo PLC and a custom Graphical User Interface (GUI) application that I developed," Stansbury says. "The GUI application provides the visual information that I need to see what is happening. The video output of the computer running my GUI application is superimposed onto my CATV home distribution network. If a burglar breaks in, the PLC sets off a siren and turns the lights on throughout the house. I turn on the TV and flip to a certain channel where I can see the exact location of the burglar. The GUI application tells me what door or window he came in and the motion detectors tell me where he is at that instant in time. In the event of a fire, the GUI application tells me where the fire is located."

Stansbury’s HVAC system is also connected to the PLC, enabling him to closely regulate the temperature in any room within his house. This is done using a system of thermocouples and dampers, which he can control based on where he is in the house. Not only has this saved money on monthly utility bills, it enabled him to leverage the main-floor HVAC unit to provide air conditioning to both levels of his house, rather than installing a second HVAC unit for the top floor.

"I’m able to use my single HVAC unit for both upstairs and downstairs by incorporating motorized dampers into the HVAC ducting," Stansbury says. "The PLC will close the downstairs dampers and open the upstairs dampers. It takes much less time to cool the upstairs area because the upstairs living area is 1/3 of the living area downstairs. So by the time the temperature upstairs reaches the cut-off temperature, the downstairs is still cool and the HVAC shuts off. The whole process then repeats itself."

Stansbury says his experience with MatrikonOPC gave him confidence integrating the MatrikonOPC Server for Modbus.
