Siemens PLC’s are very popular in Europe and are increasing in popularity in North America.
As with any series of PLC’s that have been made for a long time, there are many different
protocol and media options.
SIMATIC Ti5 PLC’s (including TI505, TI525, TI535, TI545, TI555, TI565, TI575) With a
CP2572 or compatible Ethernet card, these PLC’s can communicate with a Windows PC and the
OPC Server for TI5.
S5 PLC’s (including S5-095, S5-100, S5- 110, S5-115, S5-130, S5-135, S5-150, S5-155)
all come with MPI ports. These resemble a serial DP-9 connector. Older PLC’s come with
PPI ports. These also resemble a serial DP-9 connector. Some S5 PLC’s will have
Ethernet modules that may use H1, ISO (RFC1006), or Profinet as the protocol.
Many of the ethernet modules will support simultaneous communications via H1 and ISO
on TCP. In our experience, MPI is the most popular serial connection, and ISO on TCP
is the most popular Ethernet-based connection.
S7 PLC’s (including S7-200, S7-300 and S7-400 series) all come with MPI ports.
These resemble a serial DP-9 connector Older PLC’s come with PPI ports. These also
resemble a serial DP-9 connector. Some S5 PLC’s will have Ethernet modules that may
use H1, ISO (RFC1006), or Profinet as the protocol. Many of the ethernet modules will
support simultaneous communications via H1 and ISO on TCP.
